Mt Carmel House

A Comfort Care Home in Hilton, NY

Volunteer Opportunities

Dear Members of the Community,

At Mt Carmel House volunteers are a crucial component in making our house a success. Volunteers work in collaboration with nurses and resident care aids to support both the mental and physical health of the dying as well as their family and friends. Without volunteers the home would be unable to provide the outstanding level of care we are known to give.

Each volunteer offers residents and their families their own unique abilities from being a good listener, to being a great baker or someone who provides excellent personal care. When volunteering at Mt Carmel House not only will you improve your emotional and physical health, but you will improve that of those around you. You will connect with your community and build lifelong friendships.

We hope you will consider becoming a volunteer at our comfort care home, we would love to welcome you to our family.

To discuss interest in volunteering, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Heather at heathermtcarmelhouse@gmail.com or call (585) 366-4949 and leave a message.

Testimonials

The thing I love the most about being the volunteer coordinator at Mt Carmel House is meeting and working along side some of the most caring, selfless, and devoted people I have ever met. The volunteers at Mt. Carmel House not only positively impact each other but they leave an impression on their community that is unmeasurable.

I have been volunteering at Mt Carmel House for over two years now. I am the resident barber there. I work part time at a barber shop 15 hours a week, for the last 34 years. I enjoy making people feel good about how they look going forward, on their journey path...My goal in life is just to help people, wherever I can.. I am a widow, and can relate to what the families are going through...I feel everyone that volunteers here, feels good inside about making a small difference in their life, during their stay at Mt. Carmel. I consider all of us as "angel's helpers" on earth...

I started Mt. Carmel because of Father Jack and a personal journey of my own. I’ve been taught and guided by some amazing people. I always leave with happiness in my heart knowing those who are ailing in health are able to have the best care they can receive in their final days.

Initially, I chose to volunteer at Mt Carmel as a way to repay medical care that I required during the Covid events. My first visit secured my decision when I met the wonderful and caring staff who were there that day. I have no medical background, but I am learning and I'm willing to offer other skills that are needed from time to time at the house. I do, however, have a love for people, and I realize the importance of helping on another in our lives. I derive much pleasure by helping others in any way that I can. I also find much joy in interacting with members who stay at the home, and their families. There is also joy in sharing time with the other talented and dedicated staff. I believe you get out of life what you put into it and I am thankful to be a small part of such a caring team.

I have only been volunteering with Mt Carmel House for about two months and I am blown away everyday by the warmth and compassion of this team. This work has deepened my empathy and strengthened my capacity to be mindful, skills that I not only carry with me in my professional work as a therapist but in my personal life as well.

I have been volunteering at Mt. Carmel House since a year before covid. I have met many wonderful people over the years! I retired from nursing six years ago, and knew what was next for me!  Caring and Sharing our love for each other, giving a hug, holding a hand, making a cup of coffee for someone. My heart and caring goes out to everyone who comes through our Mt. Carmel doors!  Stop in sometime and say hello, we are happy to show our beautiful home to everyone!

Volunteering at Mt Carmel gives me a sense of purpose. It's truly an honor to be part of someone's last journey and making them comfortable and supporting them in whatever way they need. I like that our residents know that they are in control; that they are directing the process the way they want. They decide if they want to eat, or sit outside, or have a milkshake for breakfast! I have had loved ones in comfort care and know what it's like to be going through this. I like how welcoming the staff and volunteers are at Mt Carmel for not just the resident but the whole family. I see how relieved these families are to turn caregiving over to us so they can just concentrate on their loved ones. I honestly believe the resident and their families are comforted in the peace they find at Mt Carmel. I am thankful I can be a part of that.
